By some freak of scheduling, I had the Eta Sigma Phi Latin translation contest and the assessment test for graduating seniors today. Now my brain hurts. Seethis is why I try and avoid thinking at all possible costs.

On the upside, we’ve had a break in the weather. It was in the upper 40’s F (8 Cish) today and looks like the temperature will hold the rest of the week. Just when I was about to give up all hope and work on my Tauntaun-riding skills.

I also can’t decide whether to continue the H/W fanfic mania that has consumed me for the last six months or whether to focus on my original writing. It’s a debate that’s always on the back of my mind.

Fanfiction is nice on account of the built-in audience and enthusiastic fanbase. Plus, fanfic invariably gets more feedback. Which is possibly the shallowest reason to write it, but I've never tried to deny my shallowness.

But it’s been awhile since I’ve written original fiction and I could probably stand to work on it. Not to mention that I have notes for at least six stories floating around, three stories that I really should finish, and one completed work that really needs some revision.

Grr, wish I was better at juggling more than one story at a time. I don't know how you do it,

You're right about the temptation to write fanfiction; it's hard enough trying to scavange and audience within the pre-established fandom, let alone trying to garnishee attention for something original. People just have no interest in reading original fiction beyond either being your friends or fans of your fanfic. You could milk the house fanbase in that respect - drum up some support for your fanfic and then hope that that can transfer when you start posting original stuff. Doris Egan mentioned something along those lines in her LJ.

My novel's been pretty much stashed on the shelf since I started trying my hand at Housefic. Although, I must say that participating in such a high-quality fandom has done a lot for my development as a (hobby) writer. At least, that's how I justify it to myself ;)

See, there's the other thing--I'd feel bad spamming people who friended me because of my Housefic with my crappy original writing, so I'm not even sure I'd post it here.

Word. Writing in this fandom is just a challenging as writing original fiction, and in someways it's a lot more difficult--I've pushed myself harder here more than I ever did with original stuffs.

I don't either. Heh.

Having lots of stories to juggle is both good and bad for me -- sometimes I feel guilty for starting a new story when there are all these others available, that I should be working on.

Regarding original fic -- I've found that as I progress in writing Housefic, I'm starting to introduce more OCs. People like the cops Bennie Kafka and Trevor Nottingham, the thoracic surgeon Don de Cristo, Wilson's old girlfriend Lisette Dufour, Wilson's grandfather Jacob -- all those people interact with one or more of the show's characters, but they're all original, and they all have their own stories to tell.

For whatever that's worth.

Yeah, I feel guilty, but somehow that doesn't stop me from abandoning stories...
