One more small thing I want to tack on here. I just broke out my DVD and watched the first half and acid sequence again. I was never sure who shoots Joe on the scarecrow, but sure enough, there is a split second shot of himself holding a shotgun, shooting himself on the scarecrow cross. However, I was also reminded watching this again that the two quick shots of Billy playing the guitar are from a bit of an odd angle, and look very oddly like a man with a machine gun spraying bullets. I don't think this is an accident of the camera. I don't particularly like that interpretation, but it seems to be there in the film.
I knew I'd seen this more recently than a year ago...I think I've watched this is viewing party chats a couple of times now, too. I still aspire someday to see it on a big screen, with an audience. I couldn't make it to Toronto a few weeks ago when Bruce had a viewing. I wanted to go so much.
